Well babies

Ok. So neither are babies anymore. But I finally got around to the well child exams for Silas and Skadi. Well child visits are my favorite. Our Doctor talks to the kids as adults and the responses are often hilarious. 

Silas: "What is she doing to me?"

Me: "The nurse is taking your blood pressure."

Silas: "Oh. Ok." (Nurse finishes.) "Are you happy now?"

Nurse: "Umm yes."

Silas: "Did you suck all my bones away?" 

Nurse: (Laughs) "Umm no."

Silas: "Yeah, ok. I can still feel my bones in my elbows and knees. I guess you are ok now."

She enters the information into the computer.

Nurse: "Ok, just a few questions. Does he know his name?"

I just looked at her blankly for a minute.

Me: "Yes, he knows his name."

Nurse: "Does he speak in complete sentences?" 

Me: "Well..." (Pause.)

Nurse: "Ok, so he did to me, so I am guessing that's normal."

Me: "That and more."

And Skadi is busting up laughing. 

Doctor: "Silas, what do you like to eat?"

Silas: "Cheese."

Doctor: "Anything else?"

Silas: "Yogurt."

Doctor: "Anything else?" 

Silas: "Cheese."

Doctor looks at me.

Me: "He speaks the truth."

Doctor: "Silas what is your favorite thing for breakfast."

Silas: "Most definitely pizza."

WTF? The child has never had pizza for breakfast in his life.

Doctor: "Skadi what is your favorite thing for breakfast?"

Skadi: "Captain Crunch with CRUNCH BERRIES!"

WTF? I buy Captain Cruch ONCE in a moment of weakness. Trying to appease Silas at the grocery store so I can finish getting groceries and now it bites me in the butt! She thinks I give my kids pizza and sugar cereals for breakfast. GAHHH!!

Skadi grew two inches last year and remains in the 26th percentile for both height and weight. 

Silas was 32 lbs and 38.5". About 50-60th percentile for both. He's a lightweight because he eats nothing. Nothing but mango nectar, cheese and yogurt. I need to compare stats, but I am sure he is lighter than both the other two, but height is a forgotten unknown for me. I am pretty sure Leif was taller. Probably not Skadi though at age 3. She was starting to show her shrimpiness at that point. 

Well Children

Silas - age 1

Weight: 25.78 lbs - 86.62%
Height: 29.75"  - 49.6%
Head 18.9 in - 89.55%

Crawling fast, pulls himself up, mama, dada, ca (cat), uh oh (when he throws something on the floor). Loves his food - eats everything we put in front of him. Loves balls more than anything.

Skadi - age 7

Height: 45.75" - 16.3%
And since she is getting older, I am not going to post her weight. But it is commensurate with the height.
She is losing pace and I am trying not to be worried. She is a poor eater with lots of tummy aches that we have seen numerous doctors for. Even though she did not test positive for the celiac screen or for wheat allergy, we are trying gluten free for awhile. This has to show Skadi's desparation to resolve the issues as she is a baked goods junky. She gets this from me, I am positive.

Length - 29.75" - 75th percentile
Weight - 25 lbs, 2 oz - 95th percentile

Leif age 1:
Weight 23 lbs 12.5 oz (33%)
Height 30.25" (55%)

Skadi and Silas are still tracking well together. Silas just a touch heavier then Skadi. What surprises me is that Leif had a half inch on Silas at this point, but was nearly 6 lbs lighter! Bean pole. Still is.

Well Children

Born: 8 lbs 11 oz, 20.5"
Left Hospital 4 days later: 8 lbs 2 oz
7 Days Old: 8 lbs 4 oz
9 Days Old: 8 lbs 6 oz, 21.5" (Length 98th percentile, Weight/Length Ratio Percentile 4th)
13 Days Old: 8 lbs 15 oz
15 Days Old: 9 lbs 3 oz, 22" (70th percentile and 90th percentile)

Skadi:

Age 6 years 1 month well child visit 4/25/13
Weight 45 lbs - 50th percentile
Height 44" - 37th percentile

Skadi Well Child

She is healthy, happy and got a good lecture about her refusal to eat most fruits and vegetables. We are now four days later though and despite the lecture, there is no improvement in the child's fruit and vegie comsumption.

She is holding steady on the 50th percentile line where she has been solidly for the last three years.

At 5 years:
your child is 39.5 pounds, and that is
at the 48th percentile for weight.
your child is 42.5 inches, and that is
at the 49th percentile for height.

4 Year Well Child

I can't believe my baby is four! What has happened to the time?

So I will try and type between my sobs here...

Skadi had a good 4 year well child exam. She enjoyed telling long stories to her doctor and answering all her questions.

Dr: "Skadi do you know what opposites are?"

Skadi: "No."

Dr: "Ok, if I say 'tall' then the opposite of that is 'short', right?"

Skadi: "Yes, or really tall."

Dr: "Ok, let's see, what is the opposite of hot?"

Skadi: "Really hot."

Dr: "Well no, would it be cold?"

Skadi: "It could be but if it isn't hot than it might just be warm, you just never know about these things."

Dr: "She has a very advanced vocabulary.

The four shots were murder. The doctor actually gave us the option of putting them off until she was five, but since we had already talked about it and had the gummy worms ready in the car, I pulled the trigger.

Skadi cried, "I don't want shots! NO mommy!"

Me: "But they are good for you honey and keep you from getting very sick. And you didn't even cry when you got your flu shot, you will do great!"

Skadi: "I will only do shots if they give me band-aids."

Me: "If the nurse comes in without band-aids I will send her out to go get some."

Of course the nurse came in with band-aids.

Skadi didn't hold her end of the bargain up. She struggled.

And not only does she have a large vocabulary and reasoning skills for her age, but the nurse said she is freaky strong.

She screamed bloody murder.

Me: "Skadi, the band-aids are on."

Skadi: (suddenly stops screaming bloody murder) "I want to see them."

And that was that.

The nurse gave her four stickers and a lollipop and life was excellent again.

Height - 40 squirmy inches - 55th percentile
Weight - 36 lbs - 50th percentile.

Shrimp anyone?

Skadi had her well child visit the other day. It was actually last week. I normally post stats and such quickly and do a comparison.

Comparing didn't require me going to my blog this time. I know who is bigger/heavier.

Not my daughter.

I am not terribly tall, but I am not short either. Just a touch under average at 5'5". AB is just over average at just over 6' tall. So one would reason that our children should fall in there somewhere.

Leif at three was pretty normal to slightly tall: 32 lbs and 55th percentile, 39.25" and 85th percentile. Makes sense.

Skadi started out big... but if you project her adult height based off her current 3yo well child stats she should hit about 5'3".

It caused a bit of pause from her doctor. 30.25 lbs (gained 2.25 lbs since age 2) and 36.25" (grew 1.25"). She is just under 50th percentile for weight and hitting in at 29th percentile for height.

Not that big of a deal - she could be between spurts... she could be leveling out on the charts and being where she should be and will thus just not be a tall girl (the short genes do run on my side with my mom and grandma).

We have noted that she is the smallest among her peers. AB is the one who recently started commenting on it prior to the doctor's appointment. I keep buying size 3T for summer clothes and occasionally 4T for next fall. But her 2T's fit her best still. And the size 9 Keens I bought on clearance at a great price in pink for this summer? They should fit her next summer I expect...

The bigger concerns lie with her constant complaining of back aches. I have taken her to the doctor before with no path forward and a feeling she is just latching onto something to complain about. This time I pushed it because she cries, "mommy, my back hurts" and bends over or grasps her back. It just seems real.

And sure enough when her doctor pushed on her back - at her kidneys, Skadi jumped and said "oww!"

That earned her a quick referral for an ultrasound this week.
